Jews: Could God have really dwelt on earth with men, as promised to Moses?

2 man tent
yachadhoo asked:

-
When Solomon dedicated the Temple of the Lord, he said, “The LORD has said that He would dwell in a dark cloud; I have built a magnificent temple for You, a place for You to dwell forever” (2 Chron 6:1-2).

So, Solomon built a house or temple – a physical building – for God to dwell in.

But at the same time, Solomon said, “But will God really dwell on earth with men? The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain You. How much less this temple I have built!” (2 Chron 6:18).

Yet, Solomon believed in the promise God has given to Israel through Moses: “Then have them make a sanctuary for Me, and I will dwell among them” (Exodus 25:8).

-

So…I know you reject the worship of any man. So do I. So do all rightly worshipping Christians, who worship the LORD God alone – He alone being God.

But could it not be that just as God “pitched His tent” in the midst of His people Israel through the Tabernacle and Temple – while remaining God in heaven and filling the universe with His presence…
…as He likewise “pitched His tent” among us through His Son – via the “temple” of human flesh, a physical body – while remaining God in heaven and filling the universe with His presence?

Could it not be that Yeshua was the replacement of the ancient Tabernacle?

In the bible it says that God lived on Earth for a little bit.

  • Happy 2 Be... says:

    Great analysis!

i as an atheist say its god it can do what ever it wants cause if it cant then its not god so maybe yes maybe no

  • Aryeh M says:

It does not mean that God physically lives in our midst, but rathe that we will come to the Temple / Tabernacle. We will be motivated to the service of God and God will “dwell” in our hearts. God Himself does not need a house. We, however, need to find a place where we can experience holiness and be moved by that experience to a higher realm. Therefore, when the Temple was made, it was not that God came down and lived with people in the Temple but that people came to the Temple and were able to come from it and on a spiritual level live with God.

  • The angels have the phone box. says:

Christians like to think that. But then they like to think a great many other things which are unfounded.

You can keep trying all you want, but the truth remains. Jesus does not meet any of the criteria of Moshiach and that long list Christians like to drag out are all based on misreadings of the texts.

It really is that simple. Why can’t you accept that you are Christian and nothing else?

  • Ashley says:

You are jousting with Jewish law under terms of Christian reference, which is like asking a Muslim to celebrate Easter.

Judaism is richly fulfilling on a spiritual level.
    Jews are HAPPY being Jewish!!

  • JoJo says:

sure He can hang out.share some brewskis. What are we gonna do-He da man.I mean …damn. It’s God ya know?He can chill wid us.He’s the OmniHomie.

  • Tx Guy says:

As a Christian who worships with Messianic Jews it is precisely this believe and this faith that brings us together. Why would God stay far from his creation? in his unfailing love, the word became flesh and dwelt amongst us.

  • JewishGirl says:

lol. okay, let me get this straight. first solomon says that G-d will dwell in the temple. and then he clarifies and says that no, G-d won’t TRULY be dwelling in the temple, and that’s he’s just using a figure of speech. and now you’re trying to argue that despite his explanation of what he he was actually trying to say, what he really literally meant was his first unclarified declaration?

how ridiculous. you are twisting the bible to suit your own beliefs. when it comes to what solomon’s trying to say, i think i’ll take his own word for it, and not yours.

  • Mark S says:

No–this person “Yeshua” (I assume you mean Jesus) has absolutely nothing, nothing, nothing whatsoever to do with Judaism. Period.

    Two thumbs up to JewishGirl.

It would be nice if you stopped trying to re-interpret my Bible for your own purposes.

  • RJ says:

Um… “So…I know you reject the worship of any man. So do I. So do all rightly worshipping Christians, who worship the LORD God alone – He alone being God.”

You reject the worship of a man – you worship Jesus – Jesus was a man – you reject the worship of a man.

    How does that work out?

  • ivri_anokhi says:

Judaism teaches that the messiah will fulfill the following prophecies:

    * The Sanhedrin will be re-established (Isaiah 1:26)

    * Once he is King, leaders of other nations will look to him for guidance. (Isaiah 2:4)

    * The whole world will worship the One God of Israel (Isaiah 2:17)

    * He will be descended from King David (Isaiah 11:1) via King Solomon (1 Chron. 22:8-10)

    * The Messiah will be a man of this world, an observant Jew with “fear of God” (Isaiah 11:2)

    * Evil and tyranny will not be able to stand before his leadership (Isaiah 11:4)

    * Knowledge of God will fill the world (Isaiah 11:9)

    * He will include and attract people from all cultures and nations (Isaiah 11:10)

    * All Israelites will be returned to their homeland (Isaiah 11:12)

    * Death will be swallowed up forever (Isaiah 25:8)

    * There will be no more hunger or illness, and death will cease (Isaiah 25:8)

    * All the dead will rise again (Isaiah 26:19)

    * The Jewish people will experience eternal joy and gladness (Isaiah 51:11)

    * He will be a messenger of peace (Isaiah 52:7)

    * Nations will end up recognizing the wrongs they did to Israel (Isaiah 52:13-53:5)

    * The peoples of the world will turn to the Jews for spiritual guidance (Zechariah 8:23)

    * The ruined cities of Israel will be restored (Ezekiel 16:55)

    * Weapons of war will be destroyed (Ezekiel 39:9)

    * The Temple will be rebuilt, and as a result many of the suspended mitzvot will become incumbent on us (Ezekiel 40)

    * He will then perfect the entire world to serve God together (Zephaniah 3:9)

    * Jews will know the Torah without study (Jeremiah 31:33)

    * He will give us all the desires of our hearts (Psalms 37:4)

    * He will take the barren land and make it abundant and fruitful (Isaiah 51:3, Amos 9:13-15, Ezekiel 36:29-30, Isaiah 11:6-9)

Don’t confuse people who call themselves “messianic Jews” with people of the Jewish religion.

“Messianic Jews” is a code name for Christians who are trying to mislead Jews. They are to be condemned for their lying methods, and for underestimating the intelligence of their Jewish “targets.”

If, of course, one of them is born of a Jewish mother, many (but not all) halakhic decisors regard that individual as a Jew. But the movement is without a doubt a Christian scam.

It is a pity that the asker does not have knowledge of the responsa literature; otherwise she would be able to be less inaccurate.

    .

  • Loyal P says:

    No such thing.

Catholics, like the asker, should stick to Catholicism and not try to convert Jews.

  • paperback_writer says:

I’m happy to see that my fellow Jews have addressed your ‘question’ in their customary witty and intelligent manner.

‘JewishGirl’ and ‘RJ’ and Mark S have done a great job, as always.

I just need to clarify a remark made in another answer, when someone said he worships ‘with messianic jews’.

No, you worship with your FELLOW CHRISTIANS.

    ‘messianic jews’ ARE CHRISTIAN.

    They preach – Christianity

    They teach – Christianity

    They practise – Christianity

    They believe – Christianity

Anyone who takes a tiny bit of time and actually looks at what they say, will recognise it as, yep, CHRISTIANITY.

I can use chopsticks, and I love eating Dim Sum: does that mean I have the right to call myself ‘Chinese’?

    Same logic.

Judaism alone gets to define who and what is Jewish.

Just as Islam and Christianity get to define who is a Muslim and who is a Christian.

Non Jews, whatever they call themselves, don’t get to REdefine Jewish theology to suit their own purposes.

  • Isabella says:

    Acts 2:42

And they devoted themselves to the Apostles’ teaching and fellowship,
to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

One of the earliest titles given to the Eucharistic banquet is “the
breaking of bread.” It is such an unobtrusive title that many
non-eucharistic Christians never notice it when they read Acts 2. “The breaking of
bread and the prayers” refers not to little informal holy potlucks but
to the liturgy of the Eucharist. It met in informal surroundings like
the houses of believers since there were no church buildings back then
but it was always liturgical. Makes sense really, since liturgy was the
only form of communal prayer known to the Jews of antiquity. And
liturgy is not a thing imposed on freedom-loving “simple Christians” by
hierarchs, bureaucrats and priestcraft. It is a thing that springs up
naturally and supernaturally from the Jewish soil of the Church, since
Judaism is itself a rich liturgical tradition. That is why the word “liturgy”
means “the work of the people.” Worship is the work of the people.

  • Dropshortandduck says:

Catholicism tends to say that the new Tabernacle was when Mary became the mother of Jesus (Yahushua, Yeshua, Iesous, Iesus) are the transliterated of the different alphabets over those long dusty days of writing.

If the new Covenant we worship Yahweh when we praise through his sacred Son Yahushua we are told that Yahushua comes in his fathers name.

There are numerous other instances in the Scriptures where an abbreviation of the sacred name of YHWH appears in the names of prophets and other personages.

Do you sometime get confused like me I betcha on that one.

  • amiram a says:

god is a concept “created” by the fertile human imagination, however, people, who believe god to be a real entity, attribute to god many characteristics, so they could as well assume god dwells inside the Temple of solomon, or it’s later version.
but accepting the fact that God is a fictitious entity, every attribute of god and rules of worship are identified to be superstitions.

  • am says:

Dude your obsession with Jews is seriously going from annoying to creepy

  • Tand. says:

Jesus was a Jew. And not a very good Jew at that.

    He should have been ignored.
